Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) occurs when herniated disc material compresses the spinal cord or nerve roots. It is the most common cause of paralysis in chondrodystrophic dogs (Dachshund, Basset, Beagle). Early diagnosis and timely surgery are key to recovery.

Clinical signs

  • Spinal pain (crying when moving)
  • Paresis or paralysis of the hind limbs
  • Ataxia (incoordination)
  • Urinary or fecal incontinence
  • Rigid neck or inability to turn it
  • Loss of deep pain perception (emergency)

Treatment options

  • Hemilaminectomy / laminectomy
  • Preventive disc fenestration
  • Conservative medical management
  • Emergency corticosteroid therapy
  • Physical therapy and support cart
